In 1918, Garrett Insurance Agency, Inc was founded by W. G. Garrett, Jr. & L. D. Garrett.
W. G. & L. D. were secretary & treasurer of Chas. Schreiner Company, a large department store, and sold property and casualty insurance as a side line. At that time the agency was located at 736 Water Street.
In 1932 the Garrett brothers hired their nephew R. L. Schmerbeck, Jr. R. L. was hired to operate the agency on a full time basis. The agency was relocated to 717 Water Street.
Following WWII a partnership was formed between the Garrett brothers and R. L. Schmerbeck, Jr. and the agency was moved to 211 Earl Garrett Street. In 1966 R. L. Schmerbeck, III joined the agency. R. L. III is the son of R. L. Jr. In 1974 R. L. Schmerbeck, Jr. and R. L. Schmerbeck, III purchased the Garrett brothers interest in the agency.
After the purchase, a new partnership was formed between R. L. Schmerbeck, Jr. and R. L. Schmerbeck, III. Both R. L. Jr. and R. L. III brought their wives into the agency at this point. In 1984, the agency was relocated to 819 Water Street. In 1986 Stephen R. Schmerbeck joined the agency. Stephen is the son of R. L. III and grandson of R. L. Jr. In 1988 R. L. Schmerbeck, Jr. passed away and a new partnership was formed between Mrs. R. L. Schmerbeck, Jr. and R. L. Schmerbeck, III.
On January 1, 1997, a limited liability corporation (LLC) was formed at Garrett Insurance Agency. Mr. R. L. Schmerbeck, III became the president of the LLC and Stephen R. Schmerbeck, CIC became the secretary/treasurer of the LLC. In 2003, Garrett Insurance Agency, Inc changed from a LLC to a corporation – Garrett Insurance Agency, Inc. Mr. R. L. Schmerbeck, III remained president and Mr. Stephen R. Schmerbeck, CIC remained secretary/treasurer of the new corporation. Learn more about our staff... >>
